The Home News is seeking a freelance writer to cover local news, community events, and feature stories in the Bath, Northampton, Nazareth, and Lehigh Township areas.

Strong writing skills, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines required.

Must reside within Northampton County to cover local municipal meetings and community news in person. Prior journalism or writing experience and knowledge of AP Style preferred.

$40/meeting plus mileage expenses.

Duties

• Attend local municipal meetings.
• Research local news topics thoroughly to produce accurate and timely articles that resonate with the community
• Write clear, engaging, and well-structured news stories, features, and pieces following AP style guidelines
• Fact-check all information to maintain credibility and uphold journalistic standards
• Collaborate with editor to refine content, incorporate feedback, and meet publication deadlines
• Utilize word processing tools efficiently to draft, revise, and submit articles in a timely manner

Qualifications

• Proven experience in journalism, creative writing, or copywriting with a portfolio of published work preferred
• Strong writing skills with the ability to adapt tone for different audiences and formats
• Excellent communication skills for conducting interviews and collaborating with editors
• Proficiency in AP style and familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style for editing consistency
• Skilled in proofreading, copy editing, editing, fact checking, research, and writing
• Knowledge of journalistic principles including ethics, accuracy, and objectivity
• Experience with word processing software such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs is essential
• Ability to work independently under tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality standards
