Job Description

Summary

The Department of Pediatrics - Newborn is currently seeking an Assistant Professor.

Job Duties

  • Provide comprehensive medical care to newborns in the well-baby nursery, including routine newborn assessments, monitoring, and management.
  • Perform newborn circumcisions in accordance with institutional policies and clinical standards.
  • Attend and assist with deliveries as needed, based on clinical expertise, patient acuity, and service needs.
  • Conduct thorough physical examinations of newborns, assess growth and developmental status, and identify any abnormalities requiring intervention.
  • Interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory results, newborn screening tests, and imaging studies.
  • Develop, implement, and update individualized care plans based on patient condition and clinical findings.
  • Recognize and manage common newborn medical conditions and coordinate care with subspecialists when necessary.
  • Ensure appropriate discharge planning, including medical clearance, follow-up care recommendations, and coordination with outpatient providers.

Family Communication and Support:

  • Communicate effectively with families regarding their newborn’s medical condition, plan of care, and anticipated outcomes.
  • Provide education on newborn care, feeding, safe sleep practices, and warning signs requiring medical attention.
  • Offer emotional support and counseling to families during hospitalization and transition to home.
  • Promote family-centered care and engage families as active participants in the care process.

Education and Mentorship:

  • Provide teaching and supervision to medical students, residents, nursing staff, and other healthcare trainees.
  • Participate in educational activities, clinical teaching rounds, and professional development initiatives.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for nursing and interdisciplinary staff.

Quality Improvement and Patient Safety:

  • Participate in quality improvement (QI) initiatives aimed at enhancing newborn care, safety, and patient outcomes.
  • Participate in peer review, performance improvement, and patient safety programs.

Administrative and Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Attend departmental meetings, staff meetings, and multidisciplinary care conferences.
  • Serve on hospital or departmental committees as needed.
  • Complete accurate and timely medical documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Participate in operational planning, workflow optimization, and process improvement efforts.

Job Duties Continued

Schedule and Work Expectations:

  • Schedule options include:
    • Every other week schedule (one week on, one week off), or
    • Coverage on high-volume days (e.g., Wednesday–Friday or Wednesday–Saturday rotations).
  • Clinical service expectation:
    • 14 shifts per 28-day period, or
    • 15 shifts per calendar month
    • Approximately 182 days of clinical service annually
  • No night call required.
  • Typical work hours:
    • Weekdays: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
    • Weekends: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Additional Expectations:

  • Maintain current licensure, board certification, and hospital credentialing requirements.
  • Adhere to institutional policies, clinical guidelines, and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain professional conduct and collaborative relationships with the healthcare team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school

Training:

  • Completion of an accredited residency program in Pediatrics

Licensure & Certification:

  • Current, unrestricted medical license in the state of Texas (or eligibility to obtain)
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Pediatrics
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification (required)

Experience:

  • Experience in newborn care, well-baby nursery, or NICU setting preferred
  • Experience performing newborn procedures (e.g., circumcisions) preferred

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in newborn care
  • Ability to manage common neonatal conditions independently
  • Excellent communication and family education skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to quality improvement and patient safety initiatives

 

Preferred Qualifications

Education & Training:

  • Fellowship training in Neonatology or related subspecialty
  • Additional training in newborn procedures or hospital-based care

Experience:

  • Prior experience as a hospitalist in a well-baby nursery or NICU setting
  • Experience attending deliveries, including high-risk births
  • Demonstrated experience performing newborn circumcisions independently
  • Experience working in an academic or teaching hospital environment

Certifications:

  • Advanced certifications beyond NRP (e.g., Pediatric Advanced Life Support - PALS)

Skills & Attributes:

  • Strong teaching and mentorship experience with medical students and residents
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems (e.g., Epic)
  • Proven ability to work efficiently in high-volume clinical settings
