Child Welfare Digital Services (CWDS) is located in Sacramento and offers free parking. Office suites are freeway adjacent and near Natomas. Positions are currently eligible for a hybrid work schedule and requires staff to work two days each week at our Sacramento office. Changes to the hybrid/telework program are subject to change at the Governor's discretion and based on business needs. CWDS utilizes a shared workspace or "hoteling" environment when working in the office. This is an opportunity to work with creative and productive IT professionals who are passionate about serving the state's most vulnerable population of children.
Student Assistants are eligible to work a maximum of 1500 hours per 12 consecutive months. Candidates will be required to pass a live-scan background check and provide proof of application for, or enrollment in, a college curriculum preparing for an IT or Public Health related curriculum leading to a bachelor's or advanced degree for HR review.
Under close supervision of the Information Technology Manager II, the incumbent will perform a variety of tasks of broad scope in connection with the Office of Technology and Solutions Integration (OTSI) and Child Welfare Digital Services project. The Student Assistant will focus on business needs of the CWS-CARES Technology Unit and will perform IT related tasks including but not limited to, tracking, updating, entering data, reviewing test outputs, and generating basic reports and documentation. The student will use a myriad of tools including Microsoft 365 applications such as Outlook, Teams, Excel, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Forms or similar tools for workflow automation.

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Ability to or knowledge of:
• Interest or coursework in Information Technology (IT), Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Project Management, Technology Testing, Public Health or related fields, especially topics involving software development life-cycle (SDLC) for IT project management.• Ability to follow detailed instructions and perform basic data entry, validation and report updates using Excel and SharePoint.
• Familiarity with data concepts such as data integrity, version control, and organizing datasets for review or reporting.
• Basic understanding of databases or data systems (for example, knowing how to look up records, review exported data, or work with structured information).
• Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, and SharePoint for coordinating communication, managing shared mailboxes, and supporting project collaboration.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to track tasks, monitor deadlines, and support meeting logistics.
• Effective oral and verbal communication skills for varied audiences.
• Ability to compile feedback by collecting, organizing, and summarizing comments or test results into clear, structured summaries for the technical team.
• Detail oriented and able to execute predefined test steps, record results accurately, and document basic issues or inconsistencies.
• Comfortable learning new tools, applications, and processes used in large scale IT implementations.
• Proactive, dependable, and able to manage multiple small tasks while supporting senior technical staff and project leads.
• Ability to work in a diverse environment and foster relationships while exhibiting professionalism and emotional intelligence.
