Job Description

Legal Aid of Western Missouri is currently accepting applications for our legal internship program from students with a strong commitment to public service.

Under the supervision of Legal Aid staff attorneys, interns will have the opportunity to participate in case work in one or more areas of civil practice. Duties may include:
·        Conducting client interviews
·        Making initial case assessments
·        Obtaining discovery and other evidence
·        Preparing clients for administrative hearings or trials
·        Writing briefs and other legal memoranda
·        Attending community outreach and education events.

Interns often work on projects and cases that have a wide-ranging and lasting impact on our client communities. Students eligible for the Rule 13 certification by the Missouri Board of Law Examiners may have the opportunity to represent clients in court. Students will be assigned a supervising attorney who will monitor their work and oversee representation of clients at administrative, municipal, state, or federal court hearings/trials. Preference will be given to students who can commit to 30 hours of work per week.  Stipends up to $5,000 are available.  We also provide internships for school credit.

Based on geographic preference and availability, applicants may be assigned to either of our two offices in Kansas City, or satellite offices in Warrensburg, St. Joseph, and Joplin.
