Job Description

Are you a community builder with a passion for connecting compassionate hearts to those in need? We are seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to join our team and act as a vital liaison between our hospice services and the dedicated volunteers who support our patients and families. In this role, you will be the architect of our volunteer program, recruiting, training, and inspiring the individuals who help us provide the highest level of professional care. If you are a motivated leader who thrives on building relationships and making a tangible impact, we invite you to apply.

For nearly 100 years, the Visiting Nurse Association of Texas (VNA) has been a trusted pioneer in hospice care, helping our neighbors age with dignity and independence. Our mission-driven work spans 16 counties across North Texas—including Collin, Dallas, Denton, Kaufman, and Tarrant to rural communities in Fannin and Navarro—ensuring no one faces life's transitions alone. As a non-profit, we prioritize people over profits, treating every patient like family and maintaining a gold standard of clinical excellence. Beyond hospice, our community roots run deep through programs like Meals on Wheels.

Joining our team means more than a competitive salary and mileage reimbursement. We offer comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, along with employer-paid life and short and long-term disability insurance. To support your future, we offer a 401(k) with a 6% match and a fast, two-year vesting schedule. We also prioritize work-life harmony through generous PTO, eight total paid holidays, and opportunities for professional growth and tuition reimbursement—all within a supportive, mission-driven culture.

Job Summary

As a Volunteer Coordinator, your primary mission is to develop, promote, and manage a robust volunteer program that meets the needs of our hospice patients and families. Reporting to the Manager of Volunteer Services, you will ensure our program meets federal Medicare requirements while fostering a culture of engagement, appreciation, and clinical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruitment & Promotion: Actively recruit new volunteers through community speaking engagements, presentations, and public relations efforts to foster strong community ties.
  • Program Compliance: Ensure the volunteer program meets or exceeds the 5% volunteer hour requirement set by Medicare Conditions of Participation and maintain all local, state, and federal compliance standards.
  • Onboarding & Training: Manage the end-to-end onboarding process, ensuring all requirements are met in a timely manner so volunteers can be placed quickly within the Interdisciplinary Team (IDT).
  • Coordination & Placement: Provide volunteers based on the patient’s Plan of Care and maintain meticulous documentation of assignments and contact information using Netsmart.
  • Engagement & Retention: Plan and execute volunteer appreciation events and engagement activities to maintain a high level of morale and program enhancement.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the IDT and administration to develop policies and ensure the volunteer program aligns with the Agency’s philosophy of quality care.

Qualifications

  • Education: High School Graduate required; Graduate of an accredited college or university is preferred.
  • Experience: Previous experience in the recruitment and management of volunteers is preferred.
  • Skills: Ability to establish effective working relationships with both professional staff and the lay public.
    • Strong public speaking skills for community outreach.
    • Proficiency in learning healthcare documentation systems (Netsmart) and hospice regulations.
  • Requirements:
    • Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel locally.
    • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
    • Proof of TB test and Hepatitis acceptance/declination.

Working Conditions

This position is based in an office environment but requires a flexible schedule and local travel to promote agency activities. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant weather during travel. The role requires the mental stamina to handle stressful situations and deadlines with a calm, professional, and courteous demeanor at all times.
